Product detailed description

This collection of studies by a leading German medievalist is devoted to the problems of late medieval heresy and the Hussite revolution in medieval Czechia. The author reveals the changing views of medieval theologians on heresy since the end of the 13th century. At the same time, he notes the religious ideas of the heretics themselves, especially Waldensianism. He conceives of medieval heresies as an expression of dissent, directed against the authoritative approaches of the Catholic Church, and as a search for alternatives and true religious ideals. His insights into the heart of the Hussite Reformation, which he regards as a genuine religious revolution, are also guided in this spirit. The contribution of Patsch's approach lies in the fact that he views the Hussite Revolution in a broad European context without suppressing its uniqueness.
